ਯੂਕੇ ਬਰਮਿੰਘਮ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੱਜ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਂਚ ਲਈ ਡਿਪਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਯੂਕੇ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪੱਤਰ
ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ (ਮਨਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਾਲਸਾ):- ਬਰਮਿੰਘਮ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਆਗੂ, ਕੌਂਸਲਰ ਜੌਹਨ ਕਾਟਨ ਨੇ ਯੂਕੇ ਦੇ ਉਪ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਜੂਨ 1984 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫੌਜ ਦੇ ਹਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਯੂਕੇ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਜੱਜ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਾਲੀ ਜਨਤਕ ਜਾਂਚ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਣ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਕਾ ਨੀਲਾ ਤਾਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਅਪਣਾਉਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਅਗਲੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ ਡਰਬੀ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੁਆਰਾ 18 ਸਤੰਬਰ 2024 ਨੂੰ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਮਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਡਰਬੀ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਲਈ ਲੇਬਰ ਲੀਡਰ, ਨਦੀਨ ਪੀਟਫੀਲਡ ਦੁਆਰਾ 10 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਪ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜੇ ਗਏ ਇੱਕ ਪੱਤਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੈ। ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜੂਨ 1984 ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਗਈ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਇੱਕ ਜੱਜ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਤਕ ਜਾਂਚ ਹੈ। ਪੱਤਰ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਸਮਾਂ-ਸੀਮਾ ਦੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਹਮਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਟੇਨ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਦੋਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
ਸਿੱਖ ਫੈਡਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਯੂਕੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਰਿਲੀਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਡਰਬੀ ਲਈ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਲੀਡਰ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਹਫਤੇ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਉਪ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਜਵਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਹੁਣ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਪ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਖੇ 7 ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਸਿੱਖ ਫੈਡਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਕਾਰਜਕਾਰੀ ਦਬਿੰਦਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਦਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ 23 ਸਤੰਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਜੱਜ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਾਲੀ ਜਨਤਕ ਜਾਂਚ ਬਾਰੇ ਡੇਵਿਡ ਲੈਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ 40ਵੀਂ ਵਰ੍ਹੇਗੰਢ ਦੇ ਸਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਜਵਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਅਸੀਂ 31 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਪੱਤਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਜੱਜ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਾਲੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮਾਰਗਰੇਟ ਥੈਚਰ (1979-1990) ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਯੂਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਕਦਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅੱਜ ਬਰਮਿੰਘਮ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਨੇਤਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
New Delhi (Manpreet Singh Khalsa): Birmingham City Council leader, Councillor John Cotton, has written to the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister urging the prompt initiation of a public inquiry, led by a judge, into the UK’s involvement in the Indian Army’s attacks on Sikh gurdwaras in Punjab and other states in June 1984. He emphasized that any investigation into British involvement in Operation Blue Star must adopt a comprehensive approach, considering events over the following decade.
This follows a motion passed by Derby City Council on September 18, 2024, and a letter sent on October 10 by Nadine Peatfield, Labour leader for Derby City Council, to the Deputy Prime Minister. The letter highlighted that the best way to uncover the truth about Britain’s historical role in June 1984 is through a judge-led public inquiry. It added, “I am writing to request a timeline for when the promised investigation into Britain’s role in these attacks will occur.”
A press release by the Sikh Federation UK stated, “We have engaged with Derby Council Leader, who informed us earlier this week that no response has yet been received from the Deputy Prime Minister. It has now been over seven weeks since the letter was sent.” Dabinderjit Singh, principal advisor to the Sikh Federation UK, said, “We wrote to David Lammy on September 23, calling for a judge-led public inquiry to commence in the 40th anniversary year. Receiving no response, we followed up with another letter on October 31, reminding him that the inquiry should also examine anti-Sikh actions taken in the UK under Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990).”
The call for the inquiry received further support from Birmingham City Council leader John Cotton.
